Introduction Brief - Problems with meeting new people

In pairs we came up with 20 problems of being a student living in Leeds.

We then paired up with another pair, and narrowed our 40 problems down to 20.

This carried on (pairing with other groups) until we swapped our 20 problems with another groups 20 problems.

We then had to narrow them down to a final 10 problems.

We presented these 10 problems alongside the other 5 groups - having 60 problems in total (however some were duplicates).

As a class we decided on 10 final problems based on which problems were the most common among all groups.

After being assigned a problem in our groups, "Working with new people/networking", we began to research existing flyers, posters, and leaflets that present information to students.

In our groups, we made mind maps to define how we were going to present the solution to meeting new people.  From this we researched existing posters, leaflets, and hand-outs in Leeds College of Art to get ideas for the presentation of ours.

We collected several different types of hand-outs, including bookmarks, leaflets, posters, booklets, business cards, and ranging from credit card size to larger than A1.  One of our favourites is this LCA poster that folds up, showing information on one side and a poster on the other.

Today we had our first critique with another group in the class.
This was their product so far:

They have created a credit card size leaflet with all the information you need on "how to find your way round Leeds".

They took inspiration from London Underground maps, including layout and colour design research. They have shown clear development of ideas and experimentation.

We gave constructive criticism about their choice of colours for their leaflet, as white text on a light blue background didn't stand out enough and didn't catch our attention. We all agreed that the blue needed to be darker to contrast with the white more.

Some good points about their work include the well thought out credit card size format, which is easy to fit in your pocket or purse/wallet so you can always find the way to college.

For our crit, several points came up that were very helpful in what we need to improve on.

This included the font weight being too light and thin (used ultra light), the illustrations too immature compared to the sophisticated look of the leaflet, and the colours we used on the pages without a full size photo behind them.

The group we were paired with suggested we change the ultra light font to 'regular' so it was easier to read, get rid of the illustrations and change the grey coloured boxes to a different colour.

They also suggested we create a more uniformed design throughout the leaflet, keeping the geometric shapes but making the poster theme run all the way through, using the hexagonal shapes on more than one page.

I think the crit has been a huge help and has made us all see problems with our work that we might not have necessarily noticed ourselves.  We now need to tweak the grammar and design, responding to the feedback in our critique.
