Reading academic writing has opened my eyes to the way my dissertation and essay for this year should be written.

OUGD501: Practical Feedback

As an initial idea for the practical investigation relating to my essay question, I have thought about recreating corporate logotypes in a hand rendered style, to explore the versatility of the medium in digital circumstances.

Following a crit session, I received some valuable feedback including the thought that some brands need the clean cut aesthetic that corporate typefaces provide to maintain their image.

Something I could incorporate into the practical work may just be a series of experiments to discover how different (infamous) logotypes would work if they were drawn by hand rather than using a common typeface.  I would still try to maintain the brand image and reputation in the style that it was drawn in, however each logotype would be specific and unique to the certain brand.  These experiments may fail: I don't plan to create a defined solution that improves current brand logos, however the experiments should indicate how relevant hand lettering is in the digital age and how it can be a positive solution if used appropriately. I could also investigate how certain logos would look in a range of different lettering styles, from script to scrawl, as each aesthetic has different connotations.  

This may spark interest and further investigation into whether the logos work as they are or if they would be better suited as unique hand rendered designs.
