OUGD501: Practical Research

Following some feedback which suggested I only include logos that I can successfully show work with hand lettering rather than a typeface, I started to look into brands that strive on human communication and maintain a personal and informal attitude.

I researched case studies of brands that have social and ethical considerations within their mission statement and values, creating a reason for their brand to be suited to hand rendered and individual lettering. By picking out brands that represent areas of intimacy or personal/human relations I will be able to create concepts for a unique lettered logo based on their values and area of business.

Came up with a list of possible brands that apply these values

(notes in folder)

noted the types of businesses that provide services in this area e.g., body care, hair, skin, food/drink, record shops, etc

I looked on fonts in use to find script typefaces to change into lettering, but most were of brands that didn't necessarily comply with humanitarian values or were used on signs within posters.

Gingko press - Branding with typography

This book has a large selection of brand identities and logos using hand lettering and hand drawn type, and really showed me the extent to which lettering has been used in existing brands. A lot of these were quite exclusive identities and immediately communicate with the audience on a personal level.

This book shows how much variety hand rendered type and lettering can have within a brand to reflect it's image more specifically to their values by creating a unique identity. It also gives the scope to include handmade visuals into all material, such as the converse promotions which include painted textures around text and images.  This is also the case for Geist which uses a drawing with watercolour as their image logo. Also works combined with typefaces to compliment the hand rendered styles, as in Gallery Leta and Ajandek Jermina.
